Hawaii Energy to send out use reports

HONOLULU — Hawaii Energy will be sending reports to electric utility customers on four islands that with information to help people save energy and money.

The reports will go out to 62,000 households on Molokai, Maui, Lanai and the Big Island starting today. The households will receive four reports through June.

The reports will rank a household’s energy use with 99 anonymous nearby homes of similar size and construction. The reports will also suggest ways households can save energy and money on their electricity bills.

The initiative expands on a pilot program that began on Oahu last May.

Hawaii Energy is a conservation and energy efficiency program that is paid for by electric utility customers. It is administered by Science Applications International Corp. under a contract from the Hawaii Public Utilities Commission.

Authorities name officer killed on H-1

HONOLULU — Authorities have released the name of a Honolulu police officer who was killed when he stopped to help a stalled motorist Saturday night.

Officer Garret Davis, 28, was killed when his patrol car was hit from behind after he had stopped behind a stalled vehicle on the H-1 freeway in Aiea, police Chief Louis Kealoha said Sunday.

“People gotta slow down on the highways,” Kealoha said.

Davis had his blue lights on when his patrol car was hit by pickup truck driven by a 41-year-old man, Kealoha said. The patrol car was then rammed into the stalled vehicle and caught on fire.

“He didn’t even have a chance to get out,” Kealoha said.

The driver of the pickup truck was arrested for investigation of negligent homicide when he was released from a hospital, Kealoha said.

The crash occurred in clear weather but investigators were trying to determine whether speed or alcohol were factors in the crash.

Davis grew up in Folsom, Calif., attended San Francisco State University and moved to Honolulu to join the department, according to HPD spokeswoman Caroline Sluyter. Davis had been with the department for three years after graduating from the HPD academy in 2008.

Davis has a daughter who lives in California, she said. Services are pending.
